Reaching For The Moon is a pre-code musical film that was released in 1930 - it was the first film to feature Bing Crosby as a solo performer. The film was originally supposed to be an Irving Berlin musical, but after butting heads with writer-director Edmund Goulding Berlin walked off the production. The film only retained two of the several Berlin songs recorded for the film, including the title track Reaching For The Moon - which is played for the opening credits, and briefly as background music and at the end of the film. Berlin has condemned the film, which persisted in giving him full story credits. The film was very expensive to make and unprofitable, which was unfortunate considering that the public's interest in musical features was on decline. The film was later severely edited and some of the original film has been lost. In 1933, the title song Reaching For The Moon was used as the basis for a Screen Songs short featuring a version of the song recorded by Arthur Tracey. In 1940, in the early days broadcast television, the original feature film was amongst the first couple hundred films made available for broadcast.

REACHING FOR THE MOON
The moon and you appear to be
So near and yet so far from me
And here am I on a night in June
Reaching for the moon and you,
I wonder if we'll ever meet
My song of love is incomplete
I'm just the words, looking for the tune
Reaching for the moon and you.
I'm just the words, looking for the tune
Reaching for the moon and you.
The moon and you appear to be
So near and yet so far from me
And here am I on a night in June
Reaching for the moon and you,
I wonder if we'll ever meet
My song of love is incomplete
I'm just the words, looking for the tune
Reaching for the moon and you.
I'm just the words, looking for the tune
Reaching for the moon and you.
